For centuries carpenters have carried their hand tools to homes and businesses to make fine furniture and art. Our Joiners chest is a small version of the Anarchist tool chest and one that can be used for many things. In this class you’ll build an entire chest using dovetails, tongue and grooves, dado’s, for the carcass and skirt. You’ll build a rail and stiles panel lid using mortise and tenon joints, tongue and groove, and dovetails. It’s a beautiful chest that can be used for many things, but the skills you’ll acquire here while building it will open you up to build many other projects in future. All the materials and tools needed are supplied.

In this 2 day course we’ll build electric pickup cigar box guitars. We’ll cover the overall build, explain different setup techniques, explain and demonstrate intonation, show you all the details most miss, and you’ll leave with a finished cigar box of your own!

What to expect: First we’ll look at the different live edge pieces and determine your projects goals. Next we’ll use hand saws to cut the width. We’ll then use hand chisels to take off the bark. We’ll have a choice of hand planes or the sanders next. Other skills will involve measuring and drilling. You’ll leave with a beautiful working finished bench!

Come build a wall cabinet with Mathew Johnson. We’ll cover many aspect of woodworking in this predominantly hand tool class. Matt will take you on a journey of woodworking from past centuries and guide you to build your own walnut wall cabinet. Each cabinet will be distinct with some key learning points being: Hand Cut dovetail joinery. Mortise and tenon joinery. Tongue and groove. French cleat. How to install hinges. How to make a panel door. Cost including materials $795.

The Dutch style tool chest is becoming more and more popular. It’s a great chest to hold your hand tools safely without being so heavy you can’t carry it. It’s a great class to extend your knowledge of furniture joinery including dovetails, dado’s, rabbets, tongue and groove, and mortise and tenon. This is a primarily hand tool based class. It’s best for you to have taken a previous introduction to dovetail and mortise and tenon class but it’s not required. This is definitely one of the most fun builds we do here.

When you’re ready to dive into finding out what the real details are in building truly hand crafted fine furniture this is your course. You’ll be building a shaker style end table starting with 8/4 cherry and building the entire piece from one board. You’ll learn how to best use the lumber for the least waste and proper grain patters for easier building and a long lasting piece of furniture. This class will require machine work and also hand cut mortise and tenons. It’s a wonderful course to learn what the experts know and build a truly beautiful piece.

Taking our hand plane class is a great way to learn how to use your hand planes, and choose which planes you need for their intended uses. One of the most crucial parts of any hand plane is setup and sharpening. We’ll demonstrate each of these throughout the course of the day. We talk about different styles and brands, there intended uses, their maintenance needs, and a little bit of history. This is a full day class with both demonstrations and hands on work. If you are new to woodworking and want to get into hand tools, or are experienced but not quite sure why your tools don’t perform as they should, this is a great and very fun class to take.

This class is intended as a beginning class to get a person started into woodworking. We’ll go over terms, types of woods, over the tools and machine and what each one does and spend a lot of time talking safety. We’ll break for lunch then come back and begin to build a tool tote from cherry wood. You’ll leave with the confidence to start your own projects and what you’ll need to accomplish them. And a cool Tool Box!

In this 3 night course we’ll teach you how to cut and glue up maple, cherry, and walnut to make a hardwood 3D cutting board. All materials are supplied and you leave with a beautiful cutting board of your making. We’ll be using the band saw, router table, sanders, planer, and glue and clamps.
