Using a hand plane in furniture building is a critical skill. Learning what different planes do, how to set them up, and maximize their use will be covered in this class. Well be building a Japanese style tool chest out of cherry wood using only hand planes a hand saw and a hammer. These are cool boxes with tons of different uses. You’ll leave the class with the desire to spend hours using a hand plane on whatever you can find.

You’ll learn some mill techniques, hand planing, making dado’s by hand, and learning how to build understanding wood movement.

March 21 & 22, 2026 9am – 5pm each day
This class is for beginners and people with previous experience that want to learn the process, tools, and materials to safely build hand made furniture. We each build our own side table from locally sourced cherry. We have a base prototype but everyone has the opportunity to make some small changes in the design. You’ll be using many foundation tools including powered tools, and hand tools. We’ll go through the proper use of all the tools, setups, and most of all safety. It’s a great and fun project to get you started in hand made woodworking projects.Max 6 students.
